The Witch Bee Facts
🧙 The "Broomstick Bee": The Witchy Folklore of the UK's Most Unusual Insect
When you think of a witch's familiar, your mind likely drifts to a sleek black cat sitting by a bubbling cauldron, or a wise old owl perched in the rafters. But if you look closer at the chalk grasslands of the British countryside during spring, you might spot an entirely different, incredibly tiny occult assistant: the Witch Bee.
Scientifically known as the two-coloured mason bee (Osmia bicolor), this striking, solitary insect has earned a legendary reputation among entomologists and folklore lovers alike.
If you are a lover of unusual jewellery and nature’s oddities, the real-life story of how this bee raises its young reads exactly like a page from a medieval spellbook.
1. Riding on Broomsticks
The most iconic characteristic of the female Osmia bicolor and the reason behind its fantastic nickname, is its nesting behaviour.
Once she has selected a home, she flies through the air clutching long, dried grass stalks, pine needles, or twigs between her jaws. Because the stalks are often many times her own body length, she zips across the fields looking exactly like a miniature witch flying on a broomstick.
🧙 An Impressive Feat:
A female witch bee can carry sticks that are over five times her own length.
2. Snail Shell Cauldrons
Most bees nest in underground burrows or hollow tree trunks. The Witch Bee, however, prefers a much more eccentric architectural style: empty snail shells.
The female searches out vacant land-snail shells, treats the interior as her private sanctuary, and meticulously builds up to five separate nursery cells inside the spiral. She seals each chamber using a green, glue-like paste that she makes herself by chewing up fresh leaves.
Once her eggs are safe, she performs the ultimate act of natural camouflage. She uses her tiny jaws to physically roll and pivot the heavy snail shell until the opening faces safely downward into the earth.
3. Building the Thatched Fortress
To protect her hidden nursery from hungry predators and parasites, the bee begins her "broomstick flights". She collects up to 30 massive pieces of vegetation in a single half-hour session, stacking them precisely over the top of the snail shell. By the time she is finished, she has built a dense, conical teepee or "thatched roof" that entirely obscures the shell from view. Safe inside this dark, protected cavern, her young sleep through the winter, preparing to emerge the following spring.
