Unearthing the Past: Recreating a 2,500-Year-Old Masterpiece
When we look at ancient jewellery behind museum glass, it is easy to forget that these pieces were once worn, loved, and admired in daily life. One such piece is a breathtaking ram’s head bracelet housed in the British Museum (Museum Number: 1896,0201.142). Dating back to the Cypro-Classical period (around 450BC-400BC), this artefact offers a stunning window into the luxury and symbolism of the ancient Mediterranean.
The Story of the Original Find
The original bracelet was discovered in the late 19th century during the famous Turner Bequest Excavations at Kourion (Curium), an ancient coastal city-kingdom in Cyprus. It was found inside "Tomb 73," likely buried as a prized possession meant to accompany its wealthy owner into the afterlife.
The original was a masterclass in ancient multi-material smithing:
- The Structure: It featured a sturdy bronze or copper alloy core wrapped in a brilliant, burnished sheet-gold overlay.
- The Artistry: The spectacular ram's heads were die-formed in two halves, meticulously joined together, and then chased by hand using a ring-punch to create the realistic texture of the curly fleece.
- The Mystery: Archaeologists note that the deep, recessed eyes of the rams may have originally been filled with enamel, making them gleam in the sunlight.
Why the Ram?
In ancient Greek and Cypriot culture, animal head finials (the decorative end-caps on jewellery) were immensely popular. The ram was a deeply sacred symbol representing virility, leadership, and creative energy. Worn as an open-ended bangle or armlet, a bracelet like this wasn't just decoration, it was a statement of status, power, and divine protection.
